Tax paying is already a very old ‘hobby’. In the early days it had to be done cash at the tax office. Later on one could pay at the post office, which was already much many convenient as there were much more post offices than tax offices and in general closer to the public, the tax payers.

Nowadays tax paying goes via the bank and very often by automatic collection and in terms. Even in those days that one could pay taxes at the post office, it was possible to pay in terms. In this case a person in Balk (Friesland), which was at that time (1934) part of the community of Gaasterland (nowadays Balk belongs to De Friese Meren) and the tax office in charge was in Koudum.

The tax payer decided to pay his ƒ 39,90 in seven terms: 6x ƒ 5,00 and 1x (the first term) of ƒ 9,90. For paying taxes there were special forms at the post office and one became a receipt: Stortingsbewijs belasting.
